Context

At our client, the Data and AI (DAnA) department’s mission is to empower other departments within the company by making data and AI tools readily accessible.

To fulfill this mission, the department made a strategic decision in 2019 to invest in AWS, establishing the IT infrastructure necessary to support its growth and ambitions.

The department’s work is structured around two main areas:

  • Data Ingestion and Integration: Collecting and integrating data from a wide range of sources and formats.
  • Creation of Data Products: Developing and delivering data products to internal clients in various forms, including datasets, dashboards, APIs, and automation processes. These products may also leverage AI tools to enhance their value.

We are currently seeking an interim Data Governance Manager to step in following the departure of a team member. This consultant will play a key role in supporting ongoing operations, ensuring data compliance, and mitigating risks. Additionally, they will provide expert guidance to address both current and emerging data governance challenges, offering effective solutions and strategic insights.

Main challenges in terms of Data Governance

  • Enhancing the Data Privacy practices
  • Data Quality and Data Retention procedures to be put in place
  • Streamlining the DPIA process to be faster and efficient
  • Increasing awareness stakeholders towards Data compliance regulations
  • Increasing maturity of the department towards Data compliance regulations.

Your role

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team comprising a Data Architect, Platform Engineer, Solution Architect, and Cloud Security Engineer. The department includes five development teams: Cloud Operations (your team), Data Engineering, Advanced Analytics, Data Analytics and Robotic Process Automation. To maximize delivered value, these teams are organized into squads, each focused on specialized areas. The Cloud Operations team is a transversal team which works with every squad and external stakeholders. Your role will make a contribution to overcome challenges for the department, which is to bring maturity to the software development lifecycle by establishing guidelines, frameworks and quality assurance.

The role is to serve Data Governance Manager, You will serve as a cornerstone in propelling our organization’s data platform forward, enabling sustained business velocity. Leveraging their extensive expertise, they will deliver actionable insights and facilitate informed decision-making across all business teams, driving efficiency and growth through data-driven initiatives.

As a Data Governance Manager, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Defining and maintaining data privacy and compliance guidelines for data, AI, and automation products, ensuring that sensitive and personal data is handled in accordance with legal regulations and organizational standards, in close collaboration with the Data Protection Officer (DPO).
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including cross-functional teams and the Data Council, to ensure data governance solutions align with the organization’s overall goals and regulatory requirements, while maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Interpreting business requirements and acting as a liaison to ensure non-functional data handling needs are integrated into architectural designs, while maintaining alignment with broader business objectives.
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive documentation for data management processes, ensuring all stakeholders have clear and accessible guidelines. This includes documenting data governance policies, data handling procedures, compliance measures, and data lifecycle management practices.
  • Establishing a feedback loop with development teams to ensure implementations adhere to data governance standards. You will also ensure that any necessary changes are reflected in the documentation, maintaining accuracy and consistency.
  • Developing and implementing a robust incident management framework for data governance, including the identification, reporting, and resolution of data breaches and other incidents. This will involve setting up clear procedures for detection, assessment, containment, and recovery, as well as coordinating with cross-functional teams to ensure swift incident resolution and risk mitigation.
  • Overseeing the development and maintenance of a comprehensive data catalog to ensure metadata for all organizational data assets is accurate, accessible, and up-to-date. You will define standards for cataloging, ensuring the consistent documentation of data sources, lineage, and definitions, while facilitating collaboration between data stewards, IT, and business units.

Experience

  • At least 10 years of professional experience with data and AI related projects
  • More than 5 years of experience with Data management and governance
  • Relevant Certifications like Certified Data Management Professional/ Certified Information Privacy Professional and knowledge of Data Governance Framework
  • Deep understanding of data privacy laws and regulations (GDPR, AU AI Act..)
  • Experience with data cataloging tools, master data management, metadata management, and data lineage tracking
  • Extensive knowledge of data quality, data integration and data lifecycle
  • Knowledge of data management platforms, databases and data warehousing solutions
  • Have experience with stake holder management and coaching
  • Analytical thinking to troubleshoot and resolve complex problems
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work transversely with cross functional teams
  • Fluent in English and French
